Marilyn A. Walter
Statement
I am an artist who lives and works in New York City. Growing up in Kuwait and Iran has allowed me to combine my passion and knowledge of both cultures, East and West into my work.
I love the moment I close my eyes when real and invented experiences intersect. My thoughts wander, like quick moving films or snapshots, going between the seen and unseen.
Working with these ideas, I alter and manipulate images taken from my drawings, paintings, photographs or prints onto plastic sheeting, paper or Plexiglas. The mixture of multiple media sources gives me the freedom to experiment with characters, emotions, images, or settings when piecing the fragments together. These scenes are an intimate diary of memories for my ongoing narratives. My work is about recognizing the familiar in a world where so many things are lost.
Bio
Besides my printmaking and painting, I am an advocate of Homelessness programming and Alzheimer's education.
In 2011, Walter introduced an on-site, 30 foot wall installation called "A Love Affair of the Mind" at the Senior Center on 72nd Street. The idea behind the painting and print stories was to seek out thoughts on Alzheimer's from the public, to try to understand and to raise questions about the weaknesses of memory.
In 2009, participating with HomeBase IV, Walter created "A Wish List for a Shelter" engaging and collaborating with the community. A site specific room that involved needed donations for the shelter. "Wish List2Go" was the 2010 version that involved an interactive art installation at Barnes & Noble that encouraged dialogue with the public about homelessness.
